Deacons
In the New Testament, deacons were simply servants who were appointed for to take care of special needs found in the church. Several passages describe their work and qualifications (Philippians 1:1; 1 Timothy 3:8-13; Acts 6).
Burns is blessed to have two servants currently working in this special role. These are men who love the Lord and work tirelessly for his kingdom. When you come to visit us, they will be among the first you’ll get to know.
John Gabriel
Hello, I’m John Gabriel. I’m a deacon at the Burns Church of Christ where I have worshiped since 1999. I am married to my wonderful wife Kathy who introduced me to Christ after we first met. We have three lovely daughters named Destiny (1996), Kaiya (2000), and Syvanna (2001). You will typically find me either working on something around the house or playing with the girls if I am not at work. I currently work in Nashville for the Treasury Department with the State of Tennessee.
As a deacon I have been privilege to serve in several capacities. One of the more challenging and rewarding responsibilities is working with benevolence. In addition I help the Treasurer with the financial aspects. One of the things I enjoy is sharing how Christ made a difference in my life. I have been able to do some missionary work to Guyana (several times) and Hatti. Although there is a great feel of accomplishment in traveling to these distant locations and sharing the message of Christ; it is just as rewarding meeting someone from your home town and being able to introduce them to Christ.
One of the things I love most about our congregation at Burns Church of Christ is that they accepted my family and I were we where at that point in our lives. Instead of lifting their noses and pointing out our obvious mistakes in our past, they encouraged us to follow Christ’s example in our daily life. One of my favorite passages is Philippians 4:13 which says, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” Just like everyone else I struggle every day to be the person Christ wants me to be. Whether you have attended “Church” all your life or never have step foot in a Church building I invite you to visit us. One thing I can promise you is that if you are willing Christ can make a difference in your life.
Charlie Dauphin
Hello! I’m Charlie Dauphin.
I am a deacon at the Burns Church of Christ where I have worshipped since 1982, when I was baptized at 37 years old. (It is never too late to start following Christ!) I am married to Marcia. We’re newlyweds (June 2007), and between us, we have three children and eight wonderful grandchildren. I retired from the military with thirty-nine years of service and stay busy on my hobby farm.
As a deacon, I plan the monthly worship schedule, send flowers and take fruit baskets to the sick, and arrange for flowers to be sent to funerals of families connected with our congregation.
What I like most about the Burns church of Christ is the real friendliness and love shown by the members here. In fact the first time I attended in 1982 I didn’t think I was going to get to go home because everyone had to talk to me and welcome me. It is still that way today.
My favorite scripture is John 3:16: “For God so loved the world…”
I hope you’ll come visit us soon!
Charlie
