Winter Quarter Starts Sunday!

December 2, 2011
By

Our new winter quarter of classes begins this Sunday. We hope you’ll make plans to be a part of our special times together for Bible Study and fellowship!

Our kids’ curriculum is moving on great. We’ve got classes for all ages on Sunday mornings at 9 and Wednesday evenings at 7.

Here’s what’s new for our adults:

On Sunday mornings in the auditorium, Matthew and James will be teaching the Parables of Jesus in Luke.

Parables in Luke

On Wednesday nights, the auditorium class will be taught by Jerry Hall, Randy Fuqua, and Charlie Dauphin. Their topic is “The Story of God’s People” — a quick overview of what God is doing between Genesis and Revelation.

The ladies will restart their Wednesday night class downstairs in the Media Room, coordinated by Kathy Gabriel. Several of the ladies will be bringing biographical lessons of different women in scripture using the book “Bad Girls of the Bible” as a guide.

It promises to be a great quarter. Hope to see you here!

New Quarter!

Teaching is very important to us. Too many times the charge has been brought against Christians that they are ignorant, and Biblical illiteracy is on the rise. Even as far back as in the days of Moses after the Exodus, God made it clear that faith is something that should be taught and explained from generation to generation. Our education program isn’t just designed to teach facts about the Bible, it is intended to teach thought and reason and devotion to God that results in a changed life.

It’s that time again — a New Sunday School quarter beginning on Sunday, September 11, 2011! Here’s our new class line-up. If you haven’t been a part of the Sunday School program, now’s a great time to jump back in!

Sunday Morning (9am):

“Encounters with Jesus in Mark” by James Hinkle. This class meets upstairs in the auditorium.

“The Sermon on the Mount” by Matthew Hiatt. This class meets downstairs in the media room.

Wise Living

“Common sense” isn’t all that common. That’s what a quick look at the evening news makes me think, at least! People spend more than they make, and can’t figure out why they’re strapped for cash. Families fight more than they love, and can’t figure out why they’re drifting apart. Individual Christians are more concerned about their wants than the good of the body, and they can’t figure out why churches stagnate and falter.

I love the “Wisdom Literature” of the Bible. That’s why I’m excited about our new Wednesday night offerings from Proverbs. Wisdom isn’t some theoretical head-knowledge; it is the art of being truly successful where it counts—with God. Wisdom guides the head and the heart. In its fullest sense, it belongs to God alone. Job said, “With God are wisdom and might; he has counsel and understanding. If he tears down, none can rebuild; if he shuts a man in, none can open…With him are strength and sound wisdom” (Job 12:13-16).

Can I share a few nuggets of wisdom?

“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.” (Prov. 12:1)

“Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense.” (12:11)

“Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.” (13:11)

“The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death.” (14:27)

Will you drink from Proverbs, God’s fountain of wisdom? See you Wednesday night!

A Shiny New Quarter

Next Sunday is the first Sunday of a new quarter in our education ministry. This past quarter has been a great one for our church family. We had two adult classes that involved four teachers and seven children’s classes involving about eleven teachers and helpers. (And that doesn’t even count Wednesdays, when we had another two adult classes and kids’ classes!)

We’re going to try something new for this quarter: the teens and all of the adults will meet together in the auditorium on Sunday mornings for an in-depth study of the life of Joseph. We will continue to have the regular children’s classes, taught by Kim Davis, Gayle Whitfield, Alicia Dulworth, Nicole Hill, Kathy Gabriel, and Brenda Wall. Information about their topics and locations is available on the bulletin board in the foyer.
On Wednesday nights, we will have two classes coming from the Wisdom Literature of the Old Testament. The auditorium class will be team-taught by Keith Oliver and Randy Fuqua. Leslie Hiatt will be leading a ladies class downstairs in the media room studying “Wisdom for Women.” Two classes for kids will be available as well.

I like it when we begin a new quarter. It is a chance to start fresh. There is excitement about a new topic and new teachers. If you didn’t come as much as you should have last quarter, you get a clean slate starting next Sunday. You haven’t missed anything yet! It is rewarding to see a study through from beginning to end and gain a better understanding of an entire book of the Bible or important topic.

Sunday School is an investment in your spiritual growth that is recession-proof. God’s word can make us competent for any good work (2 Timothy 3:17), prevent self-destruction (Hosea 4:6), and convict us as we need (Hebrews 4:12). I challenge you to commit to raising the bar in your Bible Study!

Study to show thyself approved unto God

II Timothy 2:15 KJV

In 1971 Southern Baptist had 1,434, 892 children in Southern Baptists Sunday Schools.  By 2007 this number dropped by 455,000. At the same time the US population increased by 46%.  The Southern Baptist Convention is the largest protestant conference in the USA.

While they have been loosing people in their Sunday Schools most other religious groups have done the same. We once were know for our dynamic Bible school but now we are among those who are wondering if we can sustain our Bible classes with enough students to merit the time we spend.

Sunday Bible classes are still one of the best ways I know to teach the Bible to our youth and adults.  We try to have good teachers and prepared teachers to lead our Bible classes and we are constantly looking to make them better.  There are many of our people who vote for the close of our Bible classes by not showing any interest in them by not attending.  Although a number of our people are making a more conscious effort to be in class, we need more who will see that Bible classes are part of a good religious education program that will help our youth and adults be faithful to Jesus and his goals for our world.

What is more important to you this Sunday at 9:00 than to be in a Bible class and bring a friend with you?  We can make a difference in our community by faithful study of the word in Bible class.
